Post entry and split cuts

Throw it into the post, then the two perimeter players split: the passer screens, the cutter goes to the rim and the post reads the help.

Setup

  1. Post player on the ball-side block, a wing with the ball, a guard at the top; three defenders.
  2. Groups of three rotate positions after each possession.

How it runs

  1. The post seals with the defender on their back; the wing enters with a bounce pass away from the defender.
  2. On the entry, the passer screens for the guard: the split. The guard reads it and cuts to the rim or curls; the screener pops.
  3. The post reads: hit the cutter, kick to the popper, or score 1v1 if the defence stays home.
  4. Live to a score or stop, 3-minute blocks, 1 minute rest.

Coaching points

  • Post: wide base, catch with two hands, chin the ball and look middle before you move.
  • Enter from a good angle: move the ball or dribble to improve the line before throwing it.
  • Wait for the ball to land in the post before the split, then cut hard and close to the screen.
  • The post can't stay in the key for 3 seconds without the ball: seal, catch, or clear out.

Common mistakes

  • Lob entries over a fronting defender with no weak-side space.
  • Cutters running before the post has the ball, so they arrive too early.
  • The post putting it on the floor straight away and losing the read.

Say it: “Ball in, then split.”

Make it harder

  • Defence can front the post or dig on the entry.
  • Post has 3 seconds to pass or score.

Make it easier

  • Defenders on the perimeter only, the post plays against a pad.
  • Coach calls the split read before the entry.
