Setup

  1. Handler at the top, screener at the elbow, shooter in the weak-side corner; three defenders matched up.
  2. Spare groups of three wait on the baseline and come on after each possession.
  3. Before each rep the defence picks a coverage (drop, hedge or switch) and doesn't tell the attack.

How it runs

  1. The screener sets a legal ball screen, stationary with arms in; the handler waits for it and comes off shoulder to hip.
  2. Against a drop, pull up or snake back to the middle; against a hedge, reject or hit the pocket pass; against a switch, attack the mismatch.
  3. If the corner defender tags the roll, skip to the corner; if the big is trapped high, short roll to the free-throw line and make the next pass.
  4. Play to a score or a stop; winners stay on. Four 3-minute blocks, 1 minute rest between.

Coaching points

  • Handler: two hard dribbles to set the defender up, then read the big's feet, not the screen.
  • Screener: sprint in, set the angle, hold it, then roll or pop once the ball is past your hip.
  • Corner shooter: stay deep and on your toes; lift to the wing only if the tag stays home.
  • Make the read on the second dribble; a late decision is a turnover against a good tag.

Common mistakes

  • The handler leaves before the screen is set, so the screener moves into the defender.
  • Deciding the pass before reading the coverage.
  • The corner shooter creeps up the line and makes the tag easy.

Say it: “Read the big, then the tag.”

Make it harder

  • Add a weak-side wing on each team so the tag can be X-ed out.
  • 12-second shot clock from the first dribble.

Make it easier

  • Tell the attack the coverage before each rep.
  • Defence plays at half speed for the first block.
