Setup

  1. Groups of three: a shooter on the block, a passer at the top of the key, a closer under the basket.
  2. Cones on both wings and in one corner as shooting spots.

How it runs

  1. The shooter sprints from the block to a wing cone with hands ready; the passer hits them on arrival.
  2. As the pass goes, the closer runs out with a high hand to contest, with no contact.
  3. The shooter catches on a 1-2 step (inside foot first) or a hop, and shoots in one motion.
  4. Five shots each, then rotate shooter to passer to closer.

Coaching points

  • Hands up as a target before the ball arrives.
  • Inside foot down first so the feet and hips turn to the rim on the catch.
  • Catch low in the shot pocket; no dip down to the knees.
  • Land where you took off and hold the follow-through.

Common mistakes

  • Catching upright and then setting the feet, which gives the closer time.
  • Drifting sideways on the shot after a fast run.

Say it: “Hands ready, inside foot, up.”

Make it harder

  • The closer starts a step nearer and may block cleanly.
  • Make 3 in a row from a spot before moving on.

Make it easier

  • No closer; the coach claps when the shot must go.
  • Walk to the spot and set the feet before the pass.
