Singles attacking patterns
Rehearse a singles attacking pattern: smash straight, follow the block in, net tight, and finish the short lift.
Start / 6
- Time
- 20 min
- Players
- 2–4
- Age
- U16+
- Area
- Full court
- Equipment
- 12 shuttles
Setup
- Two players in singles bases; use the singles court (long and narrow).
- Agree the pattern before each block so the defender knows their part to start with.
How it runs
- P2 lifts deep to P1's forehand rear corner.
- P1 smashes straight; P2 blocks crosscourt to the front.
- P1 follows in fast and plays a tight net shot; P2 lunges and lifts.
- P1 attacks the lift, ideally a short one, to finish. Run the pattern 8 times, then swap.
- Stage two: the first three shots are set, then the rally is open. P1 scores 2 for winning within the pattern, 1 for winning later.
Coaching points
- Each shot sets up the next: the straight smash makes the crosscourt block the likely reply, so move for it early.
- After the smash, recover forward rather than back to base; the block is coming short.
- Take the net shot as high as possible and close to the tape so the lift that follows is weak.
- Finish with the right shot for the lift: steep smash if in balance, a fast drop or flat smash if late.
- Keep track of the pattern's score: which link in the chain breaks most often?
Common mistakes
- Smashing from behind the body, so the block is easy and the follow-in is late.
- Rushing the net shot from below the tape and lifting the shuttle up.
- Finishing with full power from a poor position and hitting the net.
- Running the pattern on autopilot once the defender starts varying replies.
Say it: “Smash, in, tight, finish.”
Make it harder
- P2 may block straight or crosscourt, or drive; P1 must read and adapt.
- Start from a rally of clears; P1 may begin the pattern on any lift deep enough.
- Play a game to 11 where only points won with a smash or a net kill count. Check your competition's rules for formal scoring; this is a practice game.
Make it easier
- A coach feeds each shot of the pattern from a basket so P1 learns the movement first.
- Remove the finish: the pattern ends with P1's net shot.
