Pressure points match play

Short games that start at late scores like 18-all or 19-20, so players practise choices and routines when every point counts.

Setup

  1. Singles or doubles. A coach or the players set a starting score for each mini-game, such as 18-18, 19-20 or 20-20.
  2. Play to 21 under normal rally-point scoring: win by two, with a cap at 30 (at 29-all the next point wins).
  3. Before each mini-game, each player names one plan, such as serve low to the T or lift to the backhand.

How it runs

  1. Start at the set score with the correct server and service court: the server serves from the right court when their score is even, the left when odd. In doubles, use the doubles service order and courts.
  2. Play the game out to 21 (or beyond, if it goes to deuce).
  3. Between mini-games, take 30 seconds to say what worked and what to change; rotate opponents or partners.
  4. Run five to eight mini-games; track wins from behind and from in front.
  5. Junior or club formats may use other scoring; check your competition's rules.

Coaching points

  • Use a between-point routine: turn away, breathe out, plan the next serve or receive, then go.
  • Under pressure, pick high-percentage shots: margin over the net and inside the lines.
  • Serve with a clear plan; a low serve with a ready racket is a strong default at late scores.
  • Play the point, not the score: one shot at a time.
  • When behind, look for the opponent's weaker side and make them hit it.

Common mistakes

  • Rushing serves and rallies when the score is close.
  • Going for lines or full-power winners from poor positions.
  • Playing safe so passively that the opponent gets to attack.
  • Losing track of the score and serving from the wrong court.

Say it: “Breathe, plan, play this point.”

Make it harder

  • Start every game at 19-20 against you.
  • Each server must alternate low and high (or flick) serves, so the receiver can't settle.
  • Add a coach's random condition, such as no smashing, for one side.

Make it easier

  • Start at 15-15 so there is more time to settle.
  • Give the weaker player or pair a two-point head start.
