Setup

  1. The feeder stands by the net post on the far side, near the sideline, with the shuttles to hand.
  2. Mark a deep target zone near the feeder's back line and a smash target in the far mid-court, well away from the feeder.
  3. The hitter starts on base in the middle of the other half. Anyone waiting stays off court behind the hitter's back line.
  4. Warm up shoulders with shadow swings and easy clears before the first set.

How it runs

  1. The feeder lifts high to either rear corner, sending the next shuttle as the hitter gets back to base.
  2. The hitter moves back, gets behind the shuttle and clears into the deep zone or smashes into the target.
  3. Start with a set of 10 shuttles, all clears, then rest while the next player works.
  4. Next sets mix clears and smashes, called by the feeder or chosen by the hitter.
  5. Between sets, waiting players collect shuttles from the far court only once the set has finished.

Coaching points

  • Turn and move back with chassé or crossover steps; don't backpedal.
  • Get behind the shuttle so contact is above and slightly in front of the hitting shoulder.
  • Use the same preparation for clear and smash, so the opponent can't read it.
  • Land balanced and push straight back to base before the next feed.
  • Keep quality: slow the feeds down if shots start dropping short.

Common mistakes

  • Letting the shuttle get behind the head and hitting it late and flat.
  • Watching the shot land instead of recovering.
  • Smashing at the feeder or the net area rather than the target.
  • Too many smashes too soon, which tires the shoulder.

Say it: “Turn, behind, hit, home.”

Make it harder

  • Feeder varies the height and pace of the lift so the hitter must adjust.
  • Add a drop to the options, so each shot is clear, drop or smash.
  • Increase the set to 15 shuttles with the same rest.

Make it easier

  • Feed to one corner only until the movement is solid.
  • Clears only, from a slightly shorter lift.
  • Longer rest between sets.
