Setup

  1. Two players, one in each half, starting from a singles base in the middle of their court.
  2. Clear stray shuttles off the court before starting; keep the spares in a tube by the post.
  3. Warm up shoulders before the first clear. A third or fourth player waits off court and rotates in.

How it runs

  1. P1 clears high to the back. P2 gets behind it and plays a straight drop.
  2. P1 moves in and plays a net shot. P2 follows in and lifts high to the back.
  3. P1 is now at the back for the next clear, and the four shots repeat.
  4. Both players touch base between every shot. Count full cycles without a mistake.
  5. After two minutes, swap roles so the other player clears and plays the net shots.

Coaching points

  • Push back to base after each shot, and split-step as the partner hits.
  • Clear high enough to give your partner time to get behind it.
  • Drop with the same preparation as the clear; just slow the racket at contact.
  • Lunge with the racket foot at the net and take the shuttle as high as you can.
  • Lift from a firm base, finishing the swing high towards the back line.

Common mistakes

  • Staying at the net or the back instead of recovering to base.
  • Drops that float to the middle of the court instead of falling near the net.
  • Lifting from a bent back rather than a bent front knee.

Say it: “Hit, base, split.”

Make it harder

  • Each shot may go straight or crosscourt, so the partner has to read it.
  • Add a smash in place of the drop every third cycle; the net player blocks.
  • Raise the target to ten unbroken cycles, starting again after any mistake.

Make it easier

  • Walk the pattern without shuttles first, then rally at half pace.
  • Shorten the court: clears land around the doubles long service line.
