Setup
- Six players stand around a 15 m circle of cones.
- One ball carrier starts in the middle; the tackler, in a bib, starts outside the circle.
- Use soft, grassy ground.
How it runs
- An edge player handballs to the carrier in the middle.
- On the coach's call the tackler jogs in and tackles around the waist.
- The carrier tries to get a handball out to a different edge player before the arms are pinned.
- The tackler turns and rolls the carrier to the side; swap in a new carrier and tackler every two goes.
Coaching points
- Tackler: head to the side, arms around the waist or hips, pin the arms.
- Turn the carrier and go to ground together on the side; never sling or drive them into the ground.
- Carrier: two hands on the ball, held low and close, and look for the free player early.
- Tackle at jog pace until the technique is clean.
Common mistakes
- Tackling high around the neck or shoulders.
- Lifting or slinging the carrier.
- Carrier holding the ball out in one hand where it gets knocked free.
Say it: “Waist, pin the arms, turn and roll to the side.”
Make it harder
- A second tackler comes in two seconds after the first.
- The carrier must handball on the non-preferred hand.
Make it easier
- Tackle standing up, with no going to ground.
- The tackler walks in.
