Setup

  1. Mark a channel 15 m long and 10 m wide with four cones.
  2. Groups of three: a runner with the ball, a shepherd beside them and a tagger in a bib on the side line, halfway.
  3. Other groups wait at the start end.

How it runs

  1. On "go", the runner carries the ball from the start line to the end line.
  2. The tagger tries to touch the runner with two hands; the shepherd stays in the tagger's path to block the way.
  3. Runner across untouched scores a point; a tag scores the tagger a point.
  4. Rotate jobs after each run so everyone shepherds, runs and tags.

Coaching points

  • Shepherd, keep your arms in and stand side-on between the tagger and the runner.
  • Use your hip and shoulder to block the path; move your feet, don't push.
  • Runner, stay close behind your shepherd and talk to them.

Common mistakes

  • Pushing or holding the tagger with your hands.
  • Shepherd running ahead and leaving the runner on their own.

Say it: “Arms in, feet moving, stay in their path.”

Make it harder

  • Make the channel narrower.
  • Add a second tagger and a second shepherd.

Make it easier

  • Tagger walks while the others jog.
  • Make the channel wider so there's more room to dodge.
