Setup

  1. Contact level: air. No contact; helmets on.
  2. Seven defenders: two corners, three linebackers (Will, Mike, Sam) and two safeties at 12 yards. The Sam's side is the strong side.
  3. A coach plays QB with a ball. Cones mark the Cover 2 landmarks: two hooks at 10 yards on the hashes and two deep halves at 20 yards on the numbers.
  4. Always line up in the same two-high look so the offence cannot read the coverage early.

How it runs

  1. The coach calls "2" or "3" in the huddle, then starts each rep with a drop-back.
  2. Cover 2: corners jam and sit in the flats at 6–8 yards. Safeties take the deep halves, landmark top of the numbers at 18–20 yards. Will and Sam take the hook-curls; the Mike drops to the middle hole at 10–12 yards.
  3. Cover 3: corners bail to the deep outside thirds and the free safety takes the deep middle third. The strong safety rolls down to the curl-flat, the Will takes the weak curl-flat, and the Mike and Sam take the hooks.
  4. Defenders drop with eyes on the QB. When the coach throws, everyone breaks on the ball; the nearest attacks the catch point and the rest rally.
  5. 4–6 reps of each, then add scout receivers for the last 5 minutes.

Coaching points

  • Open the hips and run to the landmark; slow down and settle as the QB's back foot hits.
  • Eyes on the QB, feel the receivers. Break on the QB's front shoulder, not when the ball lands.
  • Cover 2 corners: funnel the outside receiver inside and do not get beaten to the outside.
  • Cover 3 corners: stay on top of the deepest outside receiver; nothing over your head.
  • Talk: call out routes that cross into the next zone.

Common mistakes

  • Backpedalling to the landmark too slowly; turn and run instead.
  • Watching receivers and losing the QB, so the break is late.
  • Safeties in Cover 2 drifting to the middle and leaving the sideline open.
  • Rolling down early and showing the coverage before the snap.

Say it: “Same look, eyes on the QB, break on the throw.”

Make it harder

  • Add scout receivers running four verticals or a smash concept.
  • The coach pump-fakes before throwing.
  • Mix the call at the line with a single word.

Make it easier

  • Walk the drops first, then jog, then full speed.
  • Work one coverage per session.
  • Run linebackers and defensive backs as separate groups.
